The design of this facility revolved around
elements common to a nursery: sales building, greenhouse, lath house for plant stock,
pottery and planter shed, tree nursery, and storage shed. The dominant sales building
contains sales and gardening merchandise and acts as gateway to the nursery. An open steel
pavilion painted yellow creates a highly visible main entrance in front of the sales
building and greenhouse. Its shape was intended to tie the various building forms into a
cohesive whole. Materials and colors were selected to evoke various aspects of the
landscape: exterior split masonry is similar to stone; a dark green metal roof recalls
evergreen trees; and rust-colored doors, windows, and frames evoke terra cotta pottery.
